Metaraminol Bitartrate (INN, also known as Aramine, Pressonex, Metaradrine, or Metaraminol tartrate) is the bitartrate salt of metaraminol, a potent sympathomimetic amine and α1/α2-adrenergic receptor agonist. It functions as a direct and indirect adrenergic receptor agonist, with predominant α-effects, producing peripheral vasoconstriction, increased peripheral vascular resistance, and moderate enhancement of myocardial contractility. It also exhibits weak β1-adrenergic receptor agonist activity. Used as a pharmaceutical intermediate and active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) for the development and quality control of injectable solutions for intravenous or intramuscular administration. Approved for clinical use in the prevention and treatment of hypotension, particularly as a complication of spinal anesthesia, and in the management of shock states. It acts as a vasopressor comparable to ephedrine, with strong peripheral vasoconstriction and moderate increase in myocardial contractility.
