When you start working for an office, you don’t really know how things are going to be. After all, as in every relationship, even a boss-employee or employee-employee relationship does not start sour...So how were you supposed to know that your boss or your co-worker would turn out to be the scourge of your office existence?!!

Verbal abuse, women employee abuse, discrimination, threats, even actual physical abuse on your person, however ‘mild,’ happens within the office. He does it and gets away with it, because unfortunately, you need the job. The need (to keep your job) is bigger than the want (to tell him to go to the Man with the Red Suit down below). So you stay and you suffer mostly in silence, if not pretend that every thing is alright in the world.

The thing is, you don't have to put up with an abusive boss or co-worker. You are, first and foremost, a person, a human with rights. You have the right to earn a living free of verbal abuse, sexual harassment, and intimidation. Females, in particular, you need to assert yourselves, or else, things could get worse. Remember, power is not him. Power should be you. No matter how much or how little your employer pays you, you have the power to demand respect.

So how do you do that? Let us count the ways.

Step 1
DOCUMENT. DOCUMENT. DOCUMENT.
Chances are, he is used to this abusive treatment of others. If you are dealing with a pattern of women employee abuse or sexual harassment, learn to document the abuse. Write down all the instances – when, how, why (if it’s even applicable), actions you’ve taken (if any), and the responses of the abuser (is there no reaction, is he apologetic, has he become more abusive) and your co-workers (are they sympathetic, are they passive, do they blame you instead).

Keep a record of every incident and effort to prove the abuse exists and that you have made it clear to your abuser that you consider it as what it is: abuse.

Step 2
BE CLE
As mentioned above, be clear. It is very important that you become vocal about how offensive you find his words and/or actions. Inform the boss or co-worker that you consider them abusive and that you will not tolerate any such treatment again. Sometimes, whether true or not, his alibi would be that it is all a joke and/or that there is nothing malicious or intentionally discriminatory about what he says or do.

Make your abuser aware that you don’t find it funny. Tell him to stop the offending behavior. Saying "I think you're being abusive and I want you to stop" should be clear enough for him. Be firm when you say it, look him in the eye.

Step 3
WRITE A LETTER
Telling him to stop is one thing. Getting the result is another and may not be what you hope for.

If a casual conversation isn't enough to stop him from his erring ways, write a brief letter to the abuser, stating again that you do not appreciate his abusive practice, particularly of women employee abuse. Ask him to stop. To make the message clearer, in case he decides to be stubborn about it, send a copy of this letter to the personnel department or to a supervisor as well. You do not need to threaten legal action, but indicate in your letter that a copy has been sent to the supervisor. Adding this sample below should do it nicely:

cc: Supervisor’s Name

Step 4
GO TO HIS BOSS
Your company most probably has a human resources or personnel department. They are there for a reason, so put them to work. Aside from hiring people, their task is to deal with internal conflicts, and yours is internal and definitely falls under the conflict category. They would like to solve such cases of women employee abuse after all, to nip everything in the bud before such an issue causes a stain on the company’s name.

Bring what evidence you have of the abuse to their attention. Or perhaps, you can bring it to the attention of his supervisor. It would be wise, too, if you bring it to a higher-up with whom you have a friendly and positive relationship.

WARNING: DO NOT SURRENDER YOUR ONLY COPIES OF EVIDENCE. It will all boil down to whom they will support – him or you. You may find yourself engaged in legal action against your employer and because he knows it, he may find ways to stop you, and that should include getting rid of evidence. How much trust can you give the company in solving this problem, really? After all, their loyalty would most likely lie on the company.

And so, as a precaution, have copies of the evidence to provide them and copies to keep for yourself. Better too cautious than sorry.

Step 5
FIGHT A GOOD FIGHT
Should your abuser have no supervisor and/or there is no one within the workplace you can turn to, don’t lose heart. They are women’s advocacy groups who may be able to help you. Seek their assistance. In the Phlippines, approaching the group GABRIELA would be a wise decision to take.

Doing this may cost you your job. But at least, you’ll have your dignity back. And you won’t have to put up with such people. You don’t have to stay in an abusive environment. No job is worth risking your safety.

Don’t be a victim anymore. Face your abuser. Follow these steps and in the end, you’ll be happy knowing that you have braved it all without losing your principles.

Courage, friend, is the real power.
